OCR Level 4 Diploma in Careers Information and Advice

The Level 4 Diploma in Career Information and Advice has been specifically designed for those working in the new Adult Advancement and Career Service, external agency and voluntary service signposting roles, and roles where staff who work in other organisations provide career advice, information, employability support and signposting as part of their own broader work role.


The qualification will provide accredited professional development opportunities for those currently and newly working in these areas and encourage progression in the sector.

  • Mandatory units covering essential skills with a range of optional units enabling centres and learners to choose the optional units most relevant to them.
  • Learners will have the opportunity for both full qualification and unit certification.


The Level 4 Diploma in Careers Information and Advice consists of 5 mandatory units with a combined credit value of 30:

 Unit M1

Preparing to work in the career information, advice and guidance sector

Unit M2

Reflecting on practice and continuous professional development

Unit M3

Communicate with clients to determine their need for career information, advice and guidance 

Unit M4

Meeting the career–related information needs of clients  

Unit M5

Awareness of career choice theories and concepts for supporting clients  


Plus optional units to the credit value of 15. We recommend choosing from the following:

Unit O9 (credit value 6)

Using diagnostic and assessment tools with clients

Unit O10 (credit value 6)

Exploration and agreement of how to meet the career related needs of the client

O15 (credit value 3)

Understand how to support clients in particular circumstances to overcome barriers to learning, training and employment

O13 (credit value 3)

Assist clients to apply for learning and work

O16 (credit value 3)

Obtain and organise career related information including LMI

O6 (credit value 6)

Plan and deliver career- related learning in groups – Available at additional cost and will include an additional days training.


Typical programme for a taught course 

 Day 1

Induction – you, your service and your client

Units – M1 & M2

Day 2 - Interviewing skills and theories

Units – M3, M5, O13 and O10

Day 3 - Information

Units – M4, O16 and O9


Day 4 - Evaluation and Portfolio Building


Course Cost: £2,225 per person

An additional cost of £120 (classroom based) or £300 (work place based) for Unit O6
